Villagers harvesting on the land in 1998

1998

Bukatanah Village is a small village dependent in agriculture and dairy production. Adhi Nugraha buys some of this land in hopes to some day turn it into a design workshop. He builds a small hut to store farming equipment and lets the villagers continue agriculture on the land. He plants 50 pine trees across the land to remind him about Finland, where most of the trees are evergreen pine trees.

The land in the early 2000s, still in agricultural use

Early 2000s

Adhi left Indonesia to do his PhD in Finland. Bukatanah remained in agricultural use while the pine trees continued growing.

Construction of the bamboo roof structure

2012 - Return

Adhi returns to Indonesia with his family of four: two sons and a wife. The family starts building a home and design workshop in Bukatanah. Out of respect to local traditions, the buildings were built from bamboo harvested near Bukatanah. The main structure of the house was built from fully grown pine trees Adhi planted in 1998.

2014 - Local production

Bukatanah turns from agricultural land into bamboo and rattan production site. Local craftsmen, who were taught on how to work with bamboo and rattan during the construction of the house become the backbone of the production. Adhi's design furniture and bamboo buildings are sold around Indonesia.

Guests enjoying the wood-fired sauna today

Today

To touch more lives, Bukatanah opened its doors for public in 2026. The name BukatanaHUB embodies the effort of making this village a central location for people looking for memorable experiences rooted in wellness, design and locality. A traditional Finnish sauna had been a life long dream of the family and it was built to become the heart of this hub, symbolizing a holistic approach to wellness through physical, social, mental and spiritual aspects of life.

The semi-outdoor grilling area at night

Grilling area

Not just a grill, but a space where people gather around fire. We provide our dinner experiences in a semi-outdoor grilling area, where you are sheltered from the direct sun and rain, but can feel the elements. Food tastes better outside and by the fire.

The workshop space under construction, forest beyond

Workshops space

Crafting has always been a part of our identity. Our craft workshop produces handmade furniture, bamboo buildings and design objects from upcycled materials.

Community Impact

Built by the village, run by the village.

Existance of BukatanaHUB would not be possible without the local people of Bukatanah Village. They run our maintenance, keep the land green and fertile and support us in every day activities. BukatanaHUB is increasingly involving local skills in the services we provide. For example, our local sundanese "bancakan" meal option is entirely produced and set up by the women of our village, the traditional way. Our crafts workshops are hosted by skilled artisans, showcasing local wisdom on using bamboo and other natural materials.
